Hi Matteo,

Thanks for you comments. This wiki was originally created for getting Windows XP (and later some Linuxes, too) installed and running on Asus G1S series laptop. And that process involved quite a lot of tweaking of the system, trying out different drivers, partitioning the hard disk, installing boot loaders etc., and in some cases it resulted completely unusable system. That's why these tips start with the phrase "so you have messed up …"- and this phrase was meant to be a more of a joke for geeks like us, who like to play with our computers and end up quite often with a total mess and unusable system. So, the intention of the phrase was humorous - like a gotcha, but not offensive by any means.

I do acknowledge that in some cases the operating system updates or some application software may crash the system, but those happenings are actually beyond the scope of this wiki - although this wiki may provide some help and faith for those sad moments, too.

Br,
Tomi

Hi,
I do appreciate very much this wiki though I'm seing it for the first time, but it looks greatly useful and seems like it's gonna help me fix my problem, so thanks in advance.

HOWEVER there's one thing that makes me upset. Most fix/repairs tips start with the phrase "So you have messed up …" (your configuration, your system etc).

In most cases when a system won't boot it's NOT the user's fault and he hasn't messed up anything at all; usually s/he hasn't done anything a user is not supposed to do. Most of the time it is Window messing itself up.

One of the most frequent causes (in my experience) of windows not booting is after a "brute-force" shutdown due to the fact that the system becomes unresponsive.
If the system is unresponsive you have no other way to shut it down than turning the computer off physically.

And when the system becomes unresponsive, it is usually "because" one 3rd party program has become unresponsive, which in turn usually does not happen as a consequence of a user's action but because of a fault in the program.
EVEN if this is the case, this doesn't mean that if the whole system hangs up it is the program's fault. And even if the program's hang-up was caused by a user mis-action (which is virtually impossible, as a program should never hang up even in response to the most stupid action of the user: it should gracefully issue an error message and close in the worst case), it is still the OPERATING SYSTEM'S fault if the whole system hangs up.

Any DECENT operating system is responsible of NEVER becoming unresponsive even when a single program does. Even if the program is badly programmed or even malicious, the operating system should in the worst case close it and still be operating.

That's what "operating" means in "Operating System".

So please, please, please correct the offensive (and untrue in 98% of the cases) phrase "So you have messed up [things] and…" with something like "So [things] have been messed up for some reason and…"

If I understand correctly, this site is not affiliate to Asus nor Microsoft in any way, so I guess the phrase wasn't written with the intention of blaming the user for Asus and Microsoft's faults.

Just a comment.
Cheers
Matteo
